Description

Few Mexican destinations can dazzle you with colonial architecture, azure Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico waters, and colonial cities all in one fell swoop. Actually, there’s only one: The Yucatán Peninsula. The peninsula comprises parts of Belize and Guatemala, as well as three separate Mexican states: Yucatán, Quintana Roo, and Campeche. On this trip, you’ll be visiting the state of Yucatán. Enjoy a full weekend in one of México's most beautiful and trendy territories, The Yucatan Peninsula. This amazing place will dazzle you with ancient Mayan culture, colonial architecture, magic towns, underground water sinkholes, and gorgeous sunny beaches with white sand, all in one fell swoop.

You will stay in the booming colonial city of Merida, the capital of the state and two times named the American Capital of Culture. It was founded on top of an ancient Maya city called T’ho whose stonework was repurposed by the Spaniards as foundations to erect the building we see today such as lofty catholic churches and colonial mansions. Merida’s culture is a distinctive blend of traditions inherited from the ancient Maya civilization and customs brought by Spaniards with a vibrant cultural identity that continues to shape this dynamic city and one of the best Mexican cuisine.

During this side trip, you will be able to visit one of the new seven wonders of the world, Chichen Itza. The pre-Columbian Mayan city was one of the largest and most diverse and features a mix of architectural styles. It’s also popular for equinoxes when the Castillo (castle) temple forms a shadow evoking the appearance of a serpent slithering down the pyramid's steps. On both days, you will enjoy the fresh and crystal waters of the cenotes. These natural formations were created by a deadly asteroid that slammed into the seafloor off the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, 66 million years ago, wiping out the dinosaurs and creating freshwater sinkholes and caves called cenotes.

If you are looking to experience things for the first time again, and visit places you’ve never seen before, this is the side trip for you.

Truly Magical

This Yucatan weekend has been one of my highlights of the year so far! Rodo is an absolute gem, going above and beyond to ensure we all had an absolute blast. This is an experience not to be missed - visiting one of the wonders of the world, the magic of several cenotes, being in the crater of the meteor that took out the dinosaurs, and to top it off a stunning beach to spend the afternoon! Don't sleep on this one

Great Experience

This is a great experience and definitely worth the price. The boutique hotel was really cute and had the biggest and most comfortable bed. It is close to a great mall, restaurant, and shops. Just open your maps app on your phone and you can find everything. Having a chance to visit 3-4 different cenotes was amazing and there were so many photo and video worthy moments. The same with chichen itza. The process was so easy and relaxing, having two hosts to take us everywhere and then great guides onsite. I made several videos about my experience here and a provided a review for the hotel on my Youtube channel, ANOVA Travels.

Life-Changing Experience! Unexpected Paradise!

I don't know how to put everything I experienced into words, but I will try here. First off, Rodolfo was the perfect and best guide to the Merida experience we could ever have. He listened to what our hopes and goals were for our time in the Yucatan and helped make those dreams a reality. This included aranging our rides to and from the airport, walking us past lines and into salsa dance bars, arranging reservations at a rooftop bar for the lunar eclipse, scheduling a workspace at a restaurant in Progreso so we could work from the beach, and taking us to unscheduled Cenotes so we could do some cliff jumping. I do not think I would ever visit Merida again without reaching out to Rodo first. He truly made the experience worth while.

As for the scheduled experience, I would call it nothing but first class. The Cenotes we visited first with the Hacienda, then with the retreat centre were so clean, well built and truly made the experience feel like one designed to recharge and relax while learning about the importance of cenotes to the Maya, the Spanish and now modern Mexico. As for the food at these places (included and excluded) it was unreal. It made me want to bring my family back to these places to give them this kind of soul re-filling experience. The tour of Chitin was amazing. Not only did Rodo choose the best guide out of the lot, but he was humorous, fun and made the history come alive without bogging us down with history book facts. He also was very realistic about the belief systems, political systems and technology that the elite used to control the masses with during the Peak of the Mayan Civilization.

If you are looking to spiritually connect with a place that has been a hub for spiritual activity for Millenia, swim underground in underwater rivers, eat amazing food, tan on the beach and have a local experience in the Yucatan that is not over touristy Tulum or Cancun - I highly recommend this escape from the city for the weekend. It was possibly my favourite experience my whole month in Mexico.

Thanks RY and Thanks Rodolfo!
