Description
The instrument was introduced in Japan in the 7th century, until the Meiji period koto was popular within aristocratic circles, loosening influence when western musical styles started to influence Japanese culture. But increasing popularity again through Japanese rock bands who mix electric guitars with Japanese traditional instruments such as koto, shamisen, taiko and flutes.

Meet Our Local Host
Satoko Hayashi
She started playing the koto at the age of 5, studying under Ikuta-ryu Sokyoku Hafukai Dai Shihan Kiyo Onishi.
From the age of 20, she studied under Michiko Nakamura, assistant head of the Ikuta-ryu Koto School of Kuyakuhafu-kai.
She obtained her associate master's degree at the age of 26.
She opened her classroom at the age of 30.
She got her Shihan at the age of 32.
In addition to classes, she also holds hotel performances, international exchanges, school classes, live performances, and workshops.
She connects with a wide range of people and spreads Japanese culture.
Instruments played: koto (13 strings), (17 strings), and sangen (shamisen).
Performance songs: Different genres such as classics, contemporary, pops, and commercial songs.

Start time: 2:15 pm Meet Ken at the entrance of “Takashimaya”.

- Ride 4 stops (19 minutes)
- Get off at Kitanoda station
- Walk 5 minutes
- Start of the class
