Having traveled extensively around the world, Bernardo experienced first-hand how different countries and cultures welcome visitors. Whenever we travel we tend to make comparisons with our home. We come up with parallels, that often exist only in our minds, just to make the transition easier. This led him to think: what does an American, a German, or a Japanese tourist think about when they visit Portugal? Are we really that friendly? Or do we have a completely wrong idea of ourselves? How does it differ in the different regions of the mainland? What about the islands?
The questions kept piling up, so Bernardo decided to start researching the industry and studies available. Unfortunately, the information was lacking. Tourism had recently boomed in sunny Portugal, and the public institutions that govern it were trying to catch up. ""If you can't beat them, join them."" And he did. He traveled the country north and south pretending to be a foreign tourist. He got scammed, tricked, felt welcomed, made friends, and came back with a very different perspective of what is going on. This is why he decided to write his book, Turista Infiltrado (loosely translated as Undercover Tourist).
During this picnic - in one of the most iconic overlooks in the city, Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcantara, right in the neighborhood where he grew up. - Bernardo will tell us all about his experience, as well as share other travel stories and fun facts about Portugal.
