ALTAMIRA SUNSET & DINNER AT MONTAGU RESTAURANT

The first part of this trip makes the most of a relaxed sunset view point at Altamira, a sleepy town on the hills overlooking Antigua City and its volcanoes.

We’ll take our private transfer, up the windy roads, to the lookout point (about 20 mins away), widely recognised on Instagram for large wooden hands jutting into the clouds…

The area includes a unique sculpture trail and walk through local permaculture gardens. For those who want to relax a bit more, then there’s time to sit, have a drink in one of the bars and soak in the view….

And then for the main event… Montagu. Back in Antigua, this is a restaurant and experimental kitchen, not open to the public. Owned by Andres, he’s making a name for himself in Antigua for his passion for fermentation and combining unusual ingredients.

We’ll have the restaurant to ourselves, and you’ll be able to see your dinner being cooked in front of you. Not only that, there’s a cocktail bar stocked & ready for your requests, using Andres’ homemade ingredients.

For dinner you’ll be served up first a selection of Andres’ pickles, preserves and fresh bread. And then traditional tacos, but with less traditional fillings such pulled pork & pineapple, bacon and shrimp and pickled egg-plant & avocado. We can assure you that you’ll not leave hungry. In fact, it's more likely you’ll leave with leftovers for the next day AND arms full of preserves, homemade pasta and sauces.

LOCAL VILLAGES & RELIGIOUS VIEWS

This track event takes us to two local villages, San Juan Del Obispo and Santa Maria Del Jesus, both chosen for their great views of Antigua (intentionally designed for local rulers). So much interesting history surrounding these places, all of which to be told by our local Bi-lingual guide.

The first village stop is 15 mins from Antigua, and our guide will be travelling with us from the start so we’ve maximum time to get a thorough history of the area. And no tour is complete without a bit of commercialism! We’ll of course take you round the local markets, sampling local fruits. And then what goes well with fruit? Chocolate!

We’ll also visit a traditional chocolate workshop, specialising in the chocolate tablets used for hot chocolate, just 10 mins on foot within the village. And yes, samples are included :)

The second village stop, a further 15 mins away, is even more rural, with even less tourists, allowing for unspoiled insight into village life.

The whole tour lasts 5 hours from start to finish, and you’ll certainly have your fill of views, Churches and chocolate.

MAYA HERITAGE AND TRADITIONS

Visit Maya Ruins and present day Maya culture. This is a full day, starting early in the morning. We'll visit Iximche, a Maya Site, 2.5hrs away from Antigua on the pan am highway. Upon arrival we'll be greeted by our guide who will explain a bit of the past and present Maya culture as we walk through the site.  We'll  stop at a nearby traditional restaurant to enjoy a Churrasco lunch, typical to Tecpan region.

After lunch, we stop at San Simon (Maya Deity mixed with a catholic saint San Simon). We can leave cigars and aguardiente as respect as part of the tradition.

The highlight of the Experience is walking through ruins, man made mounds, seeing the past and present Maya culture and the cherry on top is leaving some traditional gifts as respect for the culture. Also enjoying a traditional lunch along the way.
