ALTAMIRA SUNSET & DINNER AT MONTAGU RESTAURANT

The first part of this trip makes the most of a relaxed sunset view point at Altamira, a sleepy town on the hills overlooking Antigua City and its volcanoes. We’ll take our private transfer, up the windy roads, to the lookout point (about 20 mins away), widely recognised on Instagram for large wooden hands jutting into the clouds.

The area includes a unique sculpture trail and walk through local permaculture gardens. For those who want to relax a bit more, then there’s time to sit, have a drink in one of the bars and soak in the view. And then for the main event, Montagu.

Back in Antigua, this is a restaurant and experimental kitchen, not open to the public. Owned by Andres, he’s making a name for himself in Antigua for his passion for fermentation and combining unusual ingredients. We’ll have the restaurant to ourselves, and you’ll be able to see your dinner being cooked in front of you. Not only that, there’s a cocktail bar stocked & ready for your requests, using Andres’ homemade ingredients.

For dinner you’ll be served up first a selection of Andres’ pickles, preserves and fresh bread. And then traditional tacos, but with less traditional fillings such pulled pork & pineapple, bacon and shrimp and pickled egg-plant & avocado. We can assure you that you’ll not leave hungry. In fact, it's more likely you’ll leave with leftovers for the next day AND arms full of preserves, homemade pasta and sauces.

LOCAL VILLAGES WITH A VIEW

This track event takes us to two local villages, San Juan Del Obispo and Santa Maria De Jesus, both chosen for their great views of Antigua (intentionally designed for local rulers). So much interesting history surrounding these places, all of which to be told by our local Bi-lingual guide.

The first village stop is 15 mins from Antigua, and our guide will be traveling with us from the start so we’ve maximum time to get a thorough history of the area. And no tour is complete without a bit of commercialism! We’ll of course take you round the local markets, sampling local fruits. And then what goes well with fruit? Chocolate!

We’ll also visit a traditional chocolate workshop, specializing in the chocolate tablets used for hot chocolate, just 10 mins on foot within the village. And yes, samples are included :)The second village stop, a further 15 mins away, is even more rural, with even less tourists, allowing for unspoiled insight into village life.

The whole tour lasts 5 hours from start to finish, and you’ll certainly have your fill of views, Churches and chocolate.

MAYA HERITAGE AND TRADITIONS

Visiting Maya Ruins and Present Day Maya culture, we depart early from Antigua on route to San Andres Itzapa, just 35 mins away from Antigua. We arrive to a surreal parking lot and Shrine for San Simon. Upon arrival to this magical place you will see the present day cosmovision of Maya Shamans doing ""limpias"" 'cleansing' and offerings to San Simon, a modern version of Maximon the Maya Deity from lake Atitlan. We leave a puro and light a candle and have a small limpia before visiting the Famous San Simon Shrine where the walls are full of offerings of gratitude to San Simon form all over latin America. a true 'Pagan' God in the eyes of the conquista and present day we will label this as taboo. A surreal and magical experience that is not the beaten path.

After this we get back on the bus and travel for 1 hour to our lunch stop. We will enjoy a great Churrasco Traditional lunch in Tecpan region famous for its cheeses and meats. Onwards to Iximche 40 mins away from our lunch stop, we arrive to one of the first Capitals of the Maya Kakchiquel. A beautiful grassland setting with great breeze and peaceful atmosphere where you will walk through the ancient ruins of this amazing place, guided by our local guide that travels with us all the way. After this experience we head back to Antigua, 1.15 hrs away.

We then get dropped off at our meeting point or apartment drop of depending on the weather. The highlight of this experience is going to a non touristic Maya Shrine seeing ancient rituals. Enjoying a great lunch together on route to an ancient maya Site, and walking around the grasslands at Iximche with a refreshing and peaceful atmosphere.
