The street artists who came from all over the world decided to interact with the history of the city. They used their artworks to tell people the past, the present and the evolutions of the town.
We explore places that are truly a symbol of the urban, cultural, and edificial regeneration that is currently happening in Palermo.
The Kalsa, which stems from the Arabic word “Al Khalisa” meaning “the chosen one”, was founded in the 10th century and has undergone innumerous transformations. Today, it is considered one of the most fascinating quarters of the city. The very first works of street art appeared in its central Piazza Magione and many more have been added throughout the years. Big murals of Piazza Magione are hidden amongst well-known alleys, the famous Vucciria Market, and seemingly forgotten corners. These range from small stencils to works of monumental proportions.
From gigantic murals that portray the judges who fought against the Mafia to small hidden stencils, street art in Palermo is very different and sophisticated.

Alternative Tours Palermo is a cultural association that started its activity in 2015.
Its purpose is to show the travelers the real soul of the town from another perspective out of the most beaten paths.
Their staff is made up of a group of licensed tour guides. They are all art historians that love guiding tours inside the city, which explore its edifices and its people up close and more personally.
