Istanbul, Turkey
MORE INFORMATION
Description
recently, the political instability in parts of the Middle East (particularly Syria and Iraq) have given Turkey the world’s largest refugee population. Many of these people gravitate to Istanbul, where there are more job opportunities, and the EU border feels within reach. However, many fail to either find jobs (in the current economic environment) or make it to Europe and end up on the streets.
Sokak Lambası Derneği (Street Light Foundation), arranges regular food distribution
programs. These are focused on the Fatih district, which has become the first destination for refugees, despite being one of Istanbul’s oldest and most historical neighborhoods, arranged around the mosque and tomb of Mehmet the Conqueror (Fatih Mehemt in Turkish). Food is prepared in a local restaurant kitchen and volunteers are needed to distribute it among local residents.
We will be visiting the Fatih district, helping an NGO to cook, prepare and serve dinner among local residents and refugees.
